With the new implementation the username will be the only required field for an LDAP user where the password will be automatically checked with the LDAP connection. This will enable a hassle free login for the user.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:verdana;"&gt;LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a protocol to access hierarchical databases (just like SQL accesses relational databases). The objects in the databases are stored in a tree, which is the reason it is called "hierarchical". The name of the root is usually called the "suffix" or "root" and all objects are stored inside it. The objects are a list of attributes. The attributes are pairs (name, value). An object can have multiple attributes with the same name (or, a less popular way of viewing it, an attribute can have multiple values). All objects in the tree must have a type (sometimes more than one). The types of an object are usually called classes. The classes themselves are called schemas. It stores the information using BDB files and keeps indexes on attributes you specify. You can use access control lists to specify which users are granted access to which information.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Examples of LDAP servers are Microsoft's Active Directory, Novell eDirectory and the free OpenLDAP. According to the experience of many developers, OpenLDAP works very well. It is very important that OrangeHRM does not lock in its data. Users of OrangeHRM should be able to switch to another system of their choice. At the same time users of other HR applications should be able to switch to OrangeHRM easily. We have been considering the idea of importing and exporting data using HR-XML for some time. However, &lt;a href="http://www.orangehrm.com/"&gt;OrangeHRM&lt;/a&gt; is community driven. Our users define its features on our &lt;a href="http://orangehrm.com/forum/"&gt;forum &lt;/a&gt;and on our &lt;a href="http://orangehrm.com/app/wiki/"&gt;Wiki&lt;/a&gt;. We have had very few request from users for HR-XML. We plan to release OrangeHRM 2.1 in January 2007. More features from the wiki will be selected for future releases&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Here's the scenario:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;h2&gt;&lt;a name="Apply_leave_for_a_range_of_days"&gt; Apply leave for a range of days &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;a name="Define_holidays"&gt; Define holidays &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h3&gt; &lt;p&gt; It was the new year and Carol decided to enter the holidays for the year to OrangeHRM. She entered all public holidays and a few company holiday that are applicable for all staff. She knew that OrangeHRM would treat these days as holidays for all employees. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;a name="Apply_for_leave"&gt; Apply for leave &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h3&gt; &lt;p&gt;Ashok was planning his vacation. He had saved enough annual leave and it was time to take it. He logged into OrangeHRM using his user id and password and accessed the tab for leave and accessed apply leave from the menu. He was taken to a page which allowed him to select a range of days before applying for leave. He could select from date and to date from using calendars. He chose the Monday and Friday of next week as the from and to dates respectively and applied for leave. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Having applied he accessed his leave list and saw that it showed the range of days he had applied for and showed the status as Pending Approval. Also he was shown the number of dates applied for and it showed 4. Ashok knew that this was due to next Wednesday being a public holiday. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;a name="Auto_notification_email_of_emplo"&gt; Auto notification email of employee applying leave &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h3&gt; &lt;p&gt;Robert checked his email after lunch and immediately noticed there was an email from OrangeHRM informing about a leave application that he needs to approve. He opened the email and saw that Ashok has applied for email for the entire next week. He logged into OrangeHRM accessed the leave module and approved leave for Ashok. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ashok got a notification for an email. He checked his mail and saw an email from OrangeHRM. He opened the email and saw that his supervisor, Robert has approved his leave for next week. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;&lt;a name="User_defines_employee_id"&gt; User defines employee id &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h2&gt; Emily was given the task of adding information of a newly joined employee to OrangeHRM. She accessed the PIM tab in OrangeHRM and created an employee by specifying the employee id and other details of the employee. The company uses a unique employee id to identify an employee. &lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;&lt;a name="More_columns_with_employee_list"&gt; More columns with employee list &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;a name="Display_more_columns_with_employ"&gt; Display more columns with employee list &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;Emily saw that the employee list in PIM included columns of employee id, name, title, department and supervisor. This gave her a very good idea of the internal hierarchy. Since she was new to the company this was very helpful. &lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;a name="Search_with_more_fields"&gt; Search with more fields &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;She was also happy to see that it was possible to search employees based on all the fields displayed in the list. This made her life easy as she wanted to have a quick way to select an employee based on a major field without having to generate a report. &lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;&lt;a name="Have_admin_leave_summary_in_one_"&gt; Have admin leave summary in one screen &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h2&gt; It was time to add leave entitlements for the new year. Carol accessed leave summary as HR administrator and was presented with a spreadsheet like view with all employees listed. She entered and saved entitlements for each employee for each type type of leave. She preferred this view more than the previous way of updating employee data per each employee. &lt;p&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;&lt;a name="Reports"&gt; Reports &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h2&gt; &lt;nop&gt;&lt;/nop&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;a name="Have_first_name_in_reports"&gt; Have first name in reports &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;Carol also noticed that now she could view first name on an employee in a report.
